    主题:Multiscale Fluid Dynamics: Modelling Challenges

    Many industrial processes and natural phenomena involve a wide range of time and space scales. Examples include oil/gas extraction, space vehicle re-entry, droplet technology, surface erosion, and micro/nano flow systems. Multiscale flow dynamics poses a formidable research challenge for modelling and simulations of fluids systems.

    In the James Weir Fluids Laboratory(www.jwfl.ac.uk), we have been addressing this research challenge, aiming to develop computational toolsto enable researchers and industry to test new concepts, products and designs.In this presentation, I will discuss some of our recent works, including

    · kinetic theory modelling of rarefied gas flows, for which the conventional Navier-Stokes equations break down;

    · shale gas extraction:understanding and quantifying the gas flow physics inexceptionally low permeability porous media with pore spaces as small as a few nano-meters across;

    · lattice Boltzmann modelling of microfluidic microdroplet dynamics.

    Finally, I will briefly talk about our joint project with Northwestern Polytechnic University on modelling particle erosion.

    主讲人介绍:

    Yonghao Zhangis Weir Chair of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK. He leads the James Weir Fluids Laboratory, working on both fundamental research and industrial applications.His expertise is in the fluid dynamics at the micro/nano scales, which presents an important technological challenge, with long-term research and industrial implications.
